Do you sell gift vouchers?
Yes, gift vouchers are available to purchase online, starting at $50.
What payment methods do you accept?

Do you have vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free options?
Yes, we have a dedicated vegetarian and vegan section on our menu, along with gluten-free and dairy-free options.
Do you serve alcohol?
Yes, we're fully licensed, with beer on tap plus wine and other drinks available.
Is there an age restriction to dine or drink?
There's no age restriction to dine, we're a family and kid-friendly venue. As with any licensed venue, only guests 18+ can be served alcohol, and ID may be requested.
Do you cater for school groups and excursions?
Yes, we've hosted school excursions since 1969 and have long-standing relationships with school groups from around Australia. We're a five-minute walk from Melbourne Museum, IMAX and the Old Melbourne Gaol. A meal session runs for one hour and includes a meal, drink and dessert. The venue has separate male and female toilets plus wheelchair-access toilets on the first floor.
Do you have outdoor or balcony seating?
Yes, our Lygon Street venue has a balcony, perfect for warm nights.
Can I host a private function or event at Universal Restaurant?
Yes, we're a function and events venue as well as a restaurant, get in touch to talk through your event.
Is Universal Restaurant wheelchair accessible?
Yes, we have disabled access, including wheelchair-access toilets on the first floor.
Is it kid-friendly?
Yes, families are welcome and we cater well for group bookings with kids, including a kids menu.
Do you do takeaway and delivery?
Yes, order online for takeaway or delivery - pizza, pasta, chicken parma and more, straight from our Lygon Street kitchen.
Do you have lunch specials or happy hour?
Yes, we run lunch specials Monday to Friday, plus happy hour deals on drinks.
How long has Universal Restaurant been around?
Since 1969 — we're one of Lygon Street's original local eateries, known for Italian comfort food like our famous chicken parma.
Are you affiliated with Glo Gelato and Glo Pasticceria next door?
Yes, Glo Gelato and Glo Pasticceria are our sister businesses, right next door on Lygon Street, run by the same family. Perfect for dessert after your meal.
Do you take bookings?
We don't take a la carte reservations - a la carte is walk-in only, and we're always able to cater to you on arrival. For groups of 8 or more, we do offer group bookings, which can be made online.
How do group bookings work?
Group bookings are for parties of 8 adults or more, run as a 2-hour sitting, and are made online only. You'll choose from set menu options featuring our most popular dishes - Italian Feast, Pizza & Pasta, or Choice of Meals - and guests can order and pay individually for drinks, desserts and extras on the night. Need a custom set menu? Email us and we'll sort it.
Is there a kids menu?
Yes, a kids menu is available for group bookings - get in touch and we can send it through.
